The cover of this special neuroscience issue of Molecular Interventions shows the autoradiographic localization of opiate receptors in the brain of a rhesus monkey. The specific distribution of receptors is visualized from computer-generated spectral coloring of densitometry data in which reds and yellows represent areas with dense receptors, green with intermediate, and blue with low density. The image was generated by Candace Pert and Miles Herkenham during a series of experiments published in 1985 [Pert et al., Neuropeptides and their receptors: A psychosomatic network. J. Immunol. 135, 820s- (1985.)] See our interview with Candace Pert on pages 361-366.
