About the Cover

Cover Figure

This month's cover depicts a model of the three-dimensional structure of an apoptosome from two oblique views (top). Procaspase-9 is located at the summit, or dome, of the hub. Density maps (bottom) indicate that the apoptosome in the presence of bound procaspase-9 (green map) undergoes a change in conformation relative to the apoptosome in the absence of procaspase-9 (yellow map). In the presence of procaspase-9, the central pore of the apoptosomal complex enlarges, and the two black spaces near the center of the apoptosome rotate vertically. For details on the assembly and regulation of apoptosomes, see the Review in this issue by Hill et al., pages 1926 [Image published in Molecular Cell 9, Acehan et al. "Three-Dimensional Structure of the Apoptosome: Implications for Assembly, Procaspase-9 Binding, and Activation," pp. 423432 (2002).
