Although the G{alpha} and the Gß{gamma} subunits of heterotrimeric G proteins can effect different signaling processes in cells, the mechanisms that govern their different signaling outcomes have been underappreciated. GoLoco motif-containing proteins bind specifically to G{alpha} loaded with GDP, and hinder Gß{gamma} from re-associating to G{alpha}. Thus, Gß{gamma}-dependent signals may be sustained. Additionally, "GoLoco proteins" may have effector functions themselves, particularly in the regulation of cell division.
